Units from fire stations 1, 3 and 4 were called to the property on the corner of Baldwin and Jenifer just before 10 p.m which caused $125,000 in damage.
Smoke was observed pouring from a second-floor window on the Jenifer street side of the house but firefighters had the fire under control quickly and no flames were observed from the street level. Venting of the residence with fans began soon after as smoke from the fire could be smelled as far away as Jolly Bob’s. Continue reading
Heenan Shooting Report Released
A report following the Madison Police Investigation into the officer-involved shooting of Paul Heenan on South Baldwin Street on November 9, 2012 has been released. Officer Stephen Heimsness, while responding to a 911 burglary in-progress call, shot Heenan three times after they had briefly struggled.
The details of that night have been somewhat in dispute leaving some neighborhood residents uneasy about police policies and transparency. The Dane County District Attorney’s office cleared Officer Heimsness of any criminal culpability, and the police department said he did not violate any policies in the process of executing his duties. Stefan’s Dream wins KVSC Trivia Marathon
Veteran team triumphs again in 34th annual 50-hour trivia contest
Stefan’s Dream XIV: Stefan’s Re-Entry won Trivia 2013: A Space Oddity, KVSC-FM St. Cloud’s 50-hour trivia contest for the fourth time since 2005. One of the larger groups in the 62-team field they bested second place Pull Start Diesel by 595 points. Diesel barely fended of last year’s champion Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women by 25 points.
Dream, Diesel, Learned Pigs are perennial front runners in the last 10 years with each dominating for several years at a time. The winning margin seemed yawing compared to last year when Learned Pigs beat Mustache and Stefan’s Dream by 25 points and 30 points respectively. It was the closest finish in contest history. Let It Snow! Pizza Pit Nostalgia Returns
Famous snowstorm pizza delivery commercial producer reveals new details
During Snowmageddon 2012 last month my thoughts turned to the classic Pizza Pit commerical from 1979, which The Isthmus wrote about a few years ago, that was so low rent it became almost instantly beloved. With the recent storm in mind, the snowfall depicted in the spot is not too far from the reality we all experienced.
Maybe a day after my original post about this, Richard Zillman (he was the writer and director) wrote to me and provided some very interesting details about how the spot came together in the summer of 1979 following a record winter for snowfall. Continue reading
City Gives Tips for a Green Holiday
The City of Madison Streets Division has a new section on their website where you can find tips on how to green up your holiday and save the planet. According to Recycling Coordinator George Dreckman, we generate 25 percent more waste during the holiday season.
Among the suggestions are using more china and silverware instead of serving food on paper plates and plastic cups, giving gift certificates for local events and services, or giving the gift of your time.
“Two of my favorite gifts are cloth shopping bags and rechargeable batteries,” Dreckmann said. “It will help your friends reduce waste all year round.”

Petition Started to Boost Eastside Public Market
City pushing ahead with Public Market plans with location up for grabs
The City of Madison is proceeding with plans for a Public Market, something Mayor Paul Soglin has been advocating since the summer. Former Mayor Dave Cieslewicz has also been bullish on a market, but has insisted that it be located downtown.
Public Markets are much like farmer’s markets except they are open most days of the week and are enclosed to fair degree if not entirely. Now with a City committee developing a plan backed by a $1.2 million budget, a petition created by the Eastside residents hopes to encourage the City to locate the market on the Eastside.
